6 Surprising Traits of Alpaca Fiber

by Joseph Sarto on April 17, 2021

Right now, there has never been a greater demand for materials and products made from those materials that are sustainable and environmentally friendly. If you are looking beyond cashmere and other popular materials for something a bit different that offers sustainability, with comfort and luxury to rival those materials, you should consider alpaca fur.

To show why we are going to look at some of the unique benefits that come from using alpaca fibers in clothing and other accessories.

Lightweight

As alpaca wool has a naturally fluffy texture and is lightweight, it is much easier to handle during its processing, shipment, and everyday use. This is thanks to the microscopic air pockets in its fibers, which help make it feel featherlight.

Unparalleled Warmth

Following on from the above point, those tiny air pockets also help to trap air, while retaining heat, which makes it a much warmer material than many of the alternatives. This means it will keep you warm and comfortable through even the toughest of environments and climates. Thanks to the air pockets, alpaca wool is also naturally very breathable, even when temperatures are high.

Robust

You may be forgiven for thinking that because alpaca wool is so lightweight and fine, that it might not be strong enough. However, alpacas are one of the toughest creatures on the planet. Their exceptionally thick coat allows them to survive in the harshest of Andean winters. As they have had to endure those extremely high climates for more thousands of years, has meant that their wool is one of the most durable materials on the planet.

In terms of longevity and durability, it can outlast even the crème de la crème of luxury fibers like silk, cashmere, and more traditional wools.

Minimal Ecological Footprint

Alpacas are famous for their small ecological footprint in the environments they call home. When compared to sheep, they do not cause harm to their natural surroundings through force. They are more civilized when nature calls and tend to do their business in the same place, each time, which reduces the effort, time, and energy needed to clear up their waste product and as their diet mainly consists of grass, they are not eating too much of natural, important resources.

Hypo-Allergenic

Although it would be wrong to say that any material is completely hypo-allergenic, one of the most impressive benefits of alpaca fibers is that they are almost there and less likely to cause an allergic reaction. This is because there is a lack of lanolin, the oil or wax found commonly found in sheep’s wool to which many people have an allergy. As their fibers are naturally waterproofed, the animals do not need to generate and secrete lanolin.

Cruelty-Free and Impressive Yield

When it comes to sheering alpacas, this is done every 12 to 18 months in a cruelty-free manner and yields various tiers in quality of wool. It’s outstanding when you think about it, that adult alpacas can yield 7kg of fiber, 3kg of which is considered the best quality.
